Today at work I had a hearing test and discovered that buzzing in the ears is often accompanied by hearing loss, such as is my case.
According to this theory, what happens is the ear makes up for whatever kind of sound it has lost by playing a makeshift replica of that very same sound back continuously for the rest of one’s life. Like a phantom sound. The more the loss, the more the sound. Realistically then, the ear is a pretty fucking vindictive organ times two, and does not appreciate to be pissed around with. Certainly not given to acknowledging its own shortcomings.
The upshot being that, in an ongoing sort of way, I’m hearing what I’m not hearing.
